CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Xavier baseball team was looking to upset the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels in the final game of the season-opening series but despite scoring 10 runs it was UNC that came away with the 16-10 win Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Xavier fell to 1-2 while North Carolina improved to 2-1.

R.C. Orlan earned his first win of the season for UNC in three innings of action. Sophomore Scott Klever was tagged with the loss in 1.1 innings of action. It was his first loss of the season. XU starter Tyler Koors pitched two innings in a no-decision outing.

Sophomore first baseman Brian Bruening went 2-for-5, posted an RBI and scored a run. A total of nine Musketeers crossed the plate with Seth Willoughby scoring twice in the second inning. Freshman catcher Derek Hasenbeck had another strong outing with two-RBI outing.

The Musketeers fell behind 6-0 after the first but a big eight-run performance in the top of the second put XU on top. Willoughby walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a Tres Eberhardt single. Seth Dawes loaded the bases with a single and an error by the Tar Heels allowed Willoughby to come home. Hasenbeck brought home two runs with a single down the left field line. The Musketeers batted through the order and Willoughby scored once more in the inning to give XU an 8-6 lead.

UNC retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second and took a 13-9 lead thanks to a five-run performance in the bottom of the fourth.

Joe Forney's RBI single that brought home Daniel Rod made it a 15-10 game in favor of UNC, but the Tar Heel Bullpen managed to hold off XU in the final innings to seal the win.

 

 

Xavier will return to action Friday, February 24 as they face Big East power Connecticut in Charleston, S.C. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
