Bruening Extends Hitting Streak To 15 Games In Loss At Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. -Xavier (1-2) suffered a 4-1 loss to College of Charleston (2-1) in the rubber match of the series. In the process, Brian Bruening put together a 1-for-4 performance to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
College of Charleston struck first in the bottom of the first with a pair of unearned runs. Xavier cut the deficit in half in the second inning. Stephen Schoettmer drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Tres Eberhardt. Jacob Bodner drove in Schoettmer with a double to left field.
The Cougars tacked on a run in both the third and seventh innings to provide the final margin. Brandon Murray homered to right field in the third and Gunnar Heidt cracked a double in the seventh to score Bradley Goodson.
Xavier mustered five hits on the day, two by Eberhardt and one each by Bruening, Schoettmer and Daniel Rod. Bruening's includes all three games this season and the final 12 contests of last year.
Tyler Koors (0-1) allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, in six innings on the mound. Koors fanned five batters and walked just one. Zach Johnson entered and pitched two innings, giving up one earned run.
Nathan Helvey (1-0) earned the victory for the Cougars, tossing six innings and allowed just one run. Dre Watts closed the door in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Xavier returns to action with a three-game series at UAB next weekend. First pitch for Friday's game is slated for 3 p.m. (CT).
