CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Xavier baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Musketeers defeated the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels 10-3 in the second game of Friday's double-header. With the win Xavier and UNC each evened their season records at 1-1.
Junior starting pitcher Jon Richard posted 5.1 innings of three-run baseball and was credited with the win. The lefthander struck out four Tar Heel batters while allowing only four hits. Junior Seth Willoughby started at second base but took the mound in the eighth to earn his first save of the season.
Chris O'Brien was pinned with the loss in 4.1 innings.
Freshman catcher Derek Hasenbeck went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run in his debut as a Musketeer. Willoughby did his part at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two runs. Mark Elwell also posted three RBI and scored a run in the win.
Hasenbeck put the Musketeers on the board in the top of the second inning with a two-RBI double to left that plated Seth Dawes and Willoughby.
Xavier added three more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to an infield RBI single by Elwell that plated Patrick Paligraf, a Daniel Rod RBI single that brought Hasebeck home, and an RBI single by Willoughby that brought Elwell home and extended the XU lead to 5-0.
The Tar Heels cut the XU lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh but a two-run eighth that featured RBI hits from Hasenbeck and freshman Joe Forney gave XU a 7-4 lead. XU added three more in the top of the ninth and Willoughby's solid relief sealed the XU win.
The Musketeers will have a chance to win the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
