CINCINNATI - Xavier (0-1) received three RBIs from senior Mark Elwell, but surrendered 12 walks on the evening in a 6-3 loss to the College of Charleston (1-0). Elwell went 2-for-4 from the plate, driving in three runs with a pair of singles.

College of Charleston opened scoring with a three-run third inning. Xavier scored its first run of the season in the fifth when Mark Elwell layed down a bunt single to score Stephen Schoettmer from third.

The Musketeers evened the score with a two-run seventh. Tres Eberhardt opened the inning with a walk and Selby Chidemo singled to third. Eberhardt and Chidemo advanced on an error by the third-baseman. Elwall drove in his second and third runs of the game with a single to right field.

However, XU wasn't able to hold the lead and allowed the Cougars to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Vinny Nittoli threw 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. The junior hurler struck out a pair of batters, while walking six. Sophomore Alex Westrick (0-1) picked up the loss after giving up three runs over 3.1 innings of work.

Matt Pegler started for College of Charleston, throwing 5.0 innings and striking out six Musketeers in the no decision. In just 1.1 innings on the mound, Michael Hanzlik (1-0) picked up the victory. Dre Watts tossed one inning to get the save.
