Otte On A-10 Awards

Junior Seth Willoughby was named to the Atlantic 10 Second Team and Alex Westrick was named to the league's All-Rookie Team. Pitching coach Nick Otte talks about their achievements on the mound this season for Xavier.

Nick Otte is beginning his fifth season at Xavier and 12th overall, after coaching stints at Miami (Ohio) and Georgetown College. He serves primarily as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the Musketeers.

Under Otte's guidance, Xavier posted three-straight top ten ERAs in the program's record books from 2011-13. The 2012 squad closed with a 3.87 ERA, the third best in program history. The 2013 Musketeers finished with a 3.95 ERA, which ranks fourth all-time, and the 2011 team is ranked seventh with a 4.25 ERA. In the same three seasons, XU also recorded top-ten single-season marks for strikeouts.

Otte was also instrumental in the success of Xavier's career-saves record holder Seth Willoughby. The right-handed reliever ended his career with a program-record 28 saves. Willoughby was then chosen by the Colorado Rockies with the 138th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2012 MLB Draft, the highest selection ever for a Musketeer. Otte also coached former Musketeer Tommy Shirley, a 9th round pick in the 2010 draft by the Houston Astros.

During his time at Miami, Otte was responsible for overseeing the progress and development of the outfielders. Additionally, he designed and implemented a year-long speed development program for the team as well as a strength and power program for the pitching staff.

Prior to his stint at Miami, Otte spent two years as the first assistant at Georgetown College overseeing several aspects of the team. He served as the recruiting coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and pitching coach while also coordinating outfield play and base running. Otte coached the Mid- South Conference and Region IX Player of the Year and in his second year lowered the team ERA from 5.23 to 4.13.

Otte also spent time at IPFW as the head assistant for two seasons while pursuing a master's degree. He served as the pitching coach, strength and conditioning coordinator and prepared advanced scouting reports. During the summers of 2002 and 2004, Otte was a head coach and pitching instructor at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. A four-year letter winner at Indiana, Otte was a scholarship student-athlete on the mound for head coach Bob Morgan and current Xavier head coach Scott Googins was an assistant at IU during three of Otte's four years as a player. Otte left IU ranked in the top 10 for career wins with 17 and for wins in a single season (eight in '99 and '01).

Otte graduated from Indiana in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in public health education with a human development and family studies minor. He and his wife Erin, reside in West Chester, with their daughters, Anna (7) and Paige (5).
