CINCINNATI- The Musketeers are headed to "the Gateway of the West" to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday. The team is looking to put an exclamation point at the end of a tremendous season. Last season, then sophomore Tommy Kauffmann set a school record in the 8K with a time of 24:38 and made it to the men's All-Conference Team. The men finished in eight place while the women earned fourth place which was their second best finish in Atlantic 10 Championship history.
Both teams are familiar with the course at Saint Louis because it was the course for the Big River Early Run competition back in September. Despite the sloppy and muddy weather, the Muskies finished first and second on the men's and women's side respectively.
The men's 8K race will start at 10:00 am CST. XU is looking to its consistent top five runners of junior Tommy Kauffmann, freshman Hank Geer, sophomore Keith Albrektson, junior Ben Nathan and junior Joe Ryan to run strong races against the tough conference competition. Rival Dayton as well as La Salle and UMass are at the top of the polls for the A-10, but the Muskies are hoping to have a top finish this year. Many of the runners are looking to run personal bests at the race.
Also competing for the men are: freshman Elijah Durian, junior Matt Riley, junior Tyler Fry, sophomore Kyle Schenekel, sophomore Sean Comer, junior Ken Schwieter and freshman Ben Pollock.
The women's 5K race will start at 10:45 am CST. The women are at the top of the A-10 rankings behind foes Richmond, Dayton, Charlotte, La Salle and Duquesne. The Xavier women are looking to improve on last season's fourth-place finish. Additionally, the women are looking for their fifth straight top-five finish. Graduate student Amy Sanders, junior Caitlin Thomas, senior Bethany Moore, freshman Calesse Cardosi and senior Danielle Meiners will lead the way for the Muskies.
The rest of the women's squad, which includes: freshman Kaitlin Price, senior Catherine Phillips, sophomore Caylin Howell, sophomore Micayla McGinn, sophomore Samantha Milroy, sophomore Megan Casey and freshman Rachael Clark are also looking to put in impressive finishes for the team.
The teams are expecting good weather in Saint Louis for the race on Saturday with temperatures projected to be in the high 50's with a 10% chance of rain. Stay tuned to GOXAVIER.com for more information about Xavier cross country.
