Pre-Nationals Information

CINCINNATI- The Musketeer men's and women's cross country teams look to continue their strong seasons as they are set to compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky. Both teams are coming off a bye week after the women placed first and the men placed ninth at the All-Ohio Championship in Cedarville, Ohio. This race at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville will be the fifth race of the season for the Musketeers.

The men's side is coming off their 4th straight top-10 finish of the season after their performance at the All-Ohio Championship two weeks ago. Junior Tom Ohlman has been the Musketeer's first overall finisher in each of the four races this season, all of which have placed him in the top-10 overall. Ohlman has also put himself into the Xavier record books with both of his 8K times this season, most notably his 24:39.5 that places him second fastest time in the 8k at the National Catholic Championship, a second and a half behind Tommy Kauffmann's fastest 8k time of 24:38. Senior captain Hank Geer has also been a strong finisher for the Musketeers so far this season, as he has been the second Musketeer in all of the races he has participated in. Geer has been very impressive coming off of an injury that kept him out of all of last year's races as he has finished 6th overall in multiple races this season. Redshirt senior Ben Foley has also been very strong for the Musketeers this season, finishing third for the Musketeers in each of the races he has ran. Foley has two top-30 finishes this season, including an 11th overall at the Queen City Invitational.

The men look to continue their top-10 overall team performances this weekend as they face the most diverse field of the season as teams from all over the country will be in Louisville on Saturday. The runners participating for the men this weekend in addition to Ohlman, Geer, and Foley will be: juniors Chris Hanson, Nick Kobunski, Spencer Liechty, and Keith Schenkel, sophomores Connor Buchholz, Aaron Moore, Matt Orlando, and Corey Zielinski, and freshman Austin Winter.

The women's cross country team has been very consistent so far in the 2012 season, including three first overall team finishes in the four events they have participate in this season. The Musketeers have been led by a strong start from junior Clare Fischer, who has finished first for the Musketeers in each of the three races she has run. Fischer has improved her time in every race so far this season, going from a finishing time of 18:47.81(2nd place overall) at the Queen City Invitational to 18:00.6 (15th overall) at the National Catholic Championship to 17:53.84 (3rd overall) at the All-Ohio Championship. Fischer has single-handedly rearranged the top-10 of the fastest women's 5k times with her performances this season and is the first woman to break into the Xavier top-5 since 2005. Her finishing time of 17:53.84 makes her the second fastest in Xavier history. Junior Jessica Albers has also been strong for the women's side this year with multiple top-30 finishes so far this season, including 5th overall at the Queen City Invitational. The women's side has seen a fair amount of contribution from the underclassmen: sophomore Audrey Ramos with three top-50 finishes, including a 7th overall finish at the Queen City Invitational, freshman Sarah Mazzei, who finished 11th overall in her first collegiate race at the Queen City Invitational, and freshman Victoria Ciotti, who has two top-25 finishes so far this season, including a 2nd overall finish in her first collegiate race at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational.

The women are of the seeded race on Saturday, which puts them among 8 of the top-25 teams in the country. The field includes national powers Florida State University, the University of Oregon, Georgetown University, and the University of Michigan as well as two other A-10 schools in Butler and Duquesne. Running for the women this weekend in Louisville, including Fischer, Albers, Ramos, Mazzei, and Ciotti will be: seniors Calesse Cardosi and Kaitlin Price, juniors Anna Ahlrichs and Abby Fischer, and sophomore Chelsea Hoffmaster.
