Four Xavier Athletes Named to the Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll
PHILADELPHIA --- Xavier had four athletes win Atlantic 10 Weekly honors on Monday. Paul Staudigel was named A-10 men's cross country Rookie of the Week. XU swept the women's tennis awards as Lauren Clary was named A-10 Player of the Week and her sister, Kristen Clary was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. Also, Meggie Hoffman won her third straight A-10 Rookie of the Week award in women's volleyball. Staudigel, a freshman from Cincinnati's Elder H.S., won his first ever A-10 Rookie of the Week award by setting a personal best time of 27:02 at the National Catholic Invitational this weekend. His 26th place finish helped Xavier to place sixth out of 25 teams this past weekend. Lauren Clary, a sophomore from Terre Haute, Ind., earns her first award of the season after winning the Flight "A" doubles competition at the Toledo Rocket Invitational over the weekend while teaming with Stephanie Bauer. She also advanced to the final of the "A" Flight singles bracket. The 2001-02 A-10 Most Outstanding Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer was named A-10 Rookie of the Week twice last season. Kristen Clary, a freshman from Terre Haute, Ind., won her first ever A-10 weekly award after winning the Flight "A" singles consolation bracket at the Toledo Rocket Invitational over the weekend. She also teamed with Kate Weightman to reach the semifinals of the "A" doubles bracket. Hoffman, a freshman outside hitter from New Prague, Minn., earned her third straight A-10 Rookie of the Week honor after leading Xavier to a 2-1 record this weekend. She led Xavier with 35 kills, eight service aces and was second on the team with 32 digs. Hoffman picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 14 kills and 18 digs in a 3-1 loss to Charlotte on Saturday and was just one dig shy of another double-double earlier in the day with 12 kills and nine digs. The weekly awards bring the Xavier total to nine for the 2002-03 academic year. In the 2001-02 academic year, Xavier athletes won 55 Atlantic 10 weekly awards.
