CINCINNATI - Xavier runner Abby Fischer earned BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week after a dominating performance at the Queen City Invitational last weekend. Fischer finished first in a field of 148 runners from 17 different universities. The Musketeer women took home the team title for the third time in as many years as four Musketeers finished in the top five.
The Xavier star completed the Queen City Invitational with a time of 17:32.16, but that is only the beginning of her accomplishments for the day. Fischer's time was not only enough to finish first but also a record-setting performance as she surpassed the old school record by a staggering 11 seconds. She also shattered her previous personal best time for a 5K by 33 seconds.
"Abby dove head first into the process, put in a lot of hard work and is now seeing the outcome that she dreamed of," said Xavier Head Coach Ryan Orner. "Abby is a relentless competitor, a great example of a Xavier University student-athlete and after this first win, I know she's going to have a great season."
The Musketeers will resume competition Friday, Sept. 20 at the National Catholic Invitational held at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
