Newcomers Pave Way For Improved Program


DAYTON, OH ? Newcomers paved the way for the Xavier University cross country teams this weekend. The Xavier women took fourth place at the Dayton Flyer Invitational 5K finishing one point behind fourth place Dayton. The men?s team finished fifth out of seven teams with 108 points. Four out of the five scorers for the women's team were newcomers while two of the five scorers for the men's team were newcomers.

Freshman Amanda Brown (Omaha, NE/Millard North) led the women?s team, finishing sixth with a time of 19:22. Senior Kristin Hoff (Plymouth, WI/Plymouth) ran to a 13th place finish with a time of 19:46. Junior and first year runner Heather Stafford (Cleveland, OH/Berea) came in 22nd with a time of 20:20. The race was Stafford?s first intercollegiate race after never running in high school. Freshman Joanna Gruber (Minster, OH/Minster) finished two places behind Stafford in 24th with a time of 20:24. Freshman Heather Fry (Avon, IN/Avon) concluded the scoring for the Musketeers with a time of 20:34 to finish 29th.

Junior Paul Staudigel (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) was the top finisher for the Xavier men. Staudigel ran a 16:02 to finish in 13th. Freshman Ben Milroy (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) ran to a 20th place finish with a time of 16:13. Senior and Academic All-American Chris Tieke (Batavia, OH/Glen Este) finished 23rd in posting a time of 16:16. Fellow senior Drew LaMaster (Prospect, KY/South Oldham) finished three places behind Tieke in 26th with a time of 16:18. Freshman newcomer Tony Matheus (Cincinnati, OH/Kings) ended the scoring for the Musketeers in placing 32nd with a time of 16:23.

The Xavier University cross country team took a major step towards improving the program in its first meet of the season.

The men?s and women?s team prepare to play host to the Provident Bank Invitational this Friday in West Chester, OH.
