Men's and Women's Cross Country Picked to Finish Ninth and Eight in A-10
Aug. 29, 2012
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men’s and women’s cross country teams have been picked to finish ninth and eighth respectively in the Atlantic 10 for the 2012 season. The women are also ranked 11th in the Great Lakes Region after finishing 16th last season.
The men start the season with three returning seniors in Ben Foley, Matt Coniglio, and Hank Geer, who is returning to action after missing last season due to injury. The junior class is led by two strong runners in Tom Ohlman and Keith Schenkel. Ohlman was one of two Musketeers last season to earn A-10 Academic All-Conference honors, marking the first time in team history two runners were named to that roster together. Xavier has a large sophomore class with strong experience in collegiate competition. Corey Zielinski, Aaron Moore, Connor Buchholz, and Matt Orlando each participated in more than two races last season as freshmen.
The women’s team starts the season with three talented seniors in Rachel Clark, the team's top middle distance runner, Calesse Cardosi, who had two top-10 finishes last season, and Kaitlin Price, who brings the most experience having participated in 20 events in her career at Xavier.
The women also boast a strong junior class led by Ashley Vincent, an NCAA Regional qualifier last season and one of the top returning runners in the Atlantic 10. Vincent is joined by Abby Fischer, Clare Fischer, Anna Ahlrichs and Jessica Albers. Sophomores include Chelsea Hoffmaster, Carrie Kurish along with Emily Kuhn and Audrey Ramos who each posted a top-10 finish at the Mount St. Joseph's Invitational last season.
There will be six new faces between the two teams when the season starts in Cincinnati at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational on August 31st. The men welcome two freshmen in Austin Winter from Laingsburg, Mich. (Lansing Catholic) and Bart Denham from Lexington, Ky. (Dunbar). The women welcome four freshmen: Emily Wolery from Lima, Ohio (Lima Shawnee), Victoria Ciotti from St. James, N.Y. (St. Anthony’s), Caterina Karas from Simpsonville, Ky. (Martha Layne Collins), and Cincinnati native Sarah Mazzei (St. Ursula Academy).
The men finished eighth last season at the A-10 Championships after being picked to finish sixth in the preseason. The women improved upon their 2011 preseason ranking, finishing seventh after being picked to finish 10th.
