Men's and Women's Cross Country End the Season with Top-20 Finishes at Regionals
Nov. 9, 2012
CINCINNATI- The Xavier men's and women's cross country teams concluded their team seasons Friday in Madison, Wisconsin at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Championship Course, the site of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The women placed 13th overall and the men placed 19th overall.
The overall goals of both teams were met today, as the women placed in the top-15 and placed the highest in the history of the program at 13th place in the 6k. Head coach Ryan Orner had nothing but praise for the women's side after the race. "Our women's team had their best race of the season and once again made program history by achieving their best overall finish at a NCAA Regional meet. Not only did six out of the seven girls run their personal best time for 6k but we had our fastest five girl average of the year."
They were led by junior Clare Fischer who placed 38th overall with a time of 21:22. She was quickly followed by twin sister Abby Fischer who placed 61st with a time of 21:43. The Fischer twins put themselves in the Xavier history books when it comes to fastest times in the 6K. Clare is now 3rd all-time and Abby is 6th all-time. The rest of the finishers for the women included sophomore Chelsea Hoffmaster who placed 79th with a time of 21:59, junior Jessica Albers who placed 94th with a time of 22:10, junior Anna Ahlrichs placed 124th with a time of 22:36, sophomore Audrey Ramos placed 138th with a time of 22:46, and senior captain Kaitlin Price placed 149th with a time of 23:01.
Another goal of the women's side for Regionals, which Orner mentioned earlier, was to top their personal best times in the 6K, and six of the seven who ran today did just that: Clare Fischer by 1:26, Abby Fischer by 1:16, Chelsea Hoffmaster by 2:30, Jessica Albers by 1:57, Anna Ahlrichs by 1:19, and Audrey Ramos by 18 seconds. Senior Kaitlin Price finished four seconds behind her best personal finish of 22:57.8 she set at last year's NCAA Regional.
The men's goal was to finish in the top-20 and did that by placing 19th Friday. Orner also had great things to say about the men's side after the race. "I thought our men's team ran well today and finished off the season with a solid race. Tom Ohlman had one of his best races ever and achieved All-Regional status by finishing in the top-25. Tom was right on the cusp of qualifying for the NCAA Championship as an individual and finished off what has been a great cross country season. Hank Geer had a great race today as well finishing 45th and Ben Foley finished his running career as a Xavier student athlete with one of his better races of the season."
The Musketeers were led by the familiar face of junior Tom Ohlman who placed 20th overall with a time of 31:40. Ohlman snagged himself the fourth spot in the top-5 for the fastest 10K in Xavier history. He also holds the second fastest time with the time of 31:21 he ran at last year's NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Ohlman also received All-Regional accolades with his finish today. Senior captain Hank Geer finished 45th with a time of 32:15 while classmate Ben Foley finished with a time of 33:31 for 115th place. Geer is now 8th all-time on the Xavier 10K list. The rest of the Xavier finishers were: junior Spencer Liechty (142nd) with a time of 34:15, freshman Austin Winter (162nd) with a time of 34:43, and sophomores Corey Zielinski (171st) and Connor Buchholz (176th) with times of 35:07 and 35:14, respectively.
Friday marked the final cross country race for three of the seniors, Kaitlin Price, Hank Geer, and Ben Foley. Xavier would also like to recognize other seniors on the team: Calesse Cardosi, Rachel Clark, and Matt Coniglio.
