Nov. 2, 2013
Kenosha, Wisc. - This morning the men's and women's cross country teams participated in their first ever BIG EAST Championship meet, where the women's team took a fifth place overall finish against a crowded field of nationally ranked talent which included No. 3 Georgetown, No. 4 Providence, No. 7 Butler and a Villanova team which is receiving votes in the polls.
"I'm very proud of both our men's and women's teams for how they finished today at the BIG EAST Championship," said Head Coach Ryan Orner. "Our women's team got out well during the first 1000 meters and competed hard during the final mile to take the 5th place spot. One thing that I was very impressed with is how close they were to Villanova, one of the top women's programs all-time."
Seniors Clare and Abby Fischer were at the front of the pack for the women's squad, with Clare finishing 20th overall with a time of 21:17 and Abby coming in 21st with a time of 21:25. Adding to the team's strong finish were junior Audrey Ramos (28th, 22:03), senior Jessica Albers (29th, 22:07) and sophomore Sarah Mazzei (32nd, 22:19).
For the men's squad, freshamn Carter Macey was the top runner of the day finishing 41st with a time of 26:35. Rounding out the top five for the Musketeers were senior Chris Hanson (42nd, 26:44), junior Corey Zielinski (23rd, 46:26), senior Spencer Liechty (44th, 26:49) and freshman Aaron Peterson (45th, 27:01).
"The men's team executed their race plan perfectly but we came up short during the second half of the race to a strong Marquette team," commented Coach Orner.
The cross country team's next meet is the NCAA Great Lake Regional in Madison, Wisc., November 15 at 2:00 pm ET.
