CINCINNATI- Junior Tommy Kauffmann was the top runner overall out of 143 runners at the Mike Hodges Invitational held in Portland Ore.  Kauffmann edged out a runner from Oregon, finishing with a time of 19:55.  The men finished in third place out of 13 teams behind top division-three team Willamette and Oregon.  The women were led by junior Caitlin Thomas, finishing in fourth place out of 11 squads behind Oregon, Portland and Washington.

Both teams adjusted well to the travel and three hour time difference from Cincinnati to place amongst some of the best squads in the nation.  This is the first time the Musketeers have been to Portland since the 2005 season.

The Muskie men had some great success today led by their top runners.  Freshman Hank Geer finished in 14th place with a time of 20:30 and sophomore Keith Albrektson ended up right behind his teammate in 15th place running in 20:31.  Junior tri-captain Ben Nathan crossed in 40th place with a time of 21:15.  Joe Ryan was the final Muskie to place, coming in 50th place with a 21:38 time.  Other notable finishes for the men were: Elijah Durian who finished in 52nd place with a time of 21:39 and junior Matt Riley who finished in 54th with a time of 21:43.

The top three men, Tommy Kauffmann, Hank Geer and Keith Albrektson, broke the Xavier school record set at this course when the Musketeers ran it in 2005.

The women also finished with some success.  Caitlin Thomas finished in 21st place out of 127 participants with a time of 18:55.  Senior Bethany Moore finished one second after Thomas coming in 22nd place in 18:56.  Freshman Caleese Cardosi continued her strong rookie season by finishing in 26th place with a time of 19:11.  Senior Danielle Meiners crossed in 19:15 earning 28th place.  Freshman Kaitlin Price finished with a time of 19:32 which placed her in 37th place.  Senior Kate Phillips rounded out the team with a time of 19:57, coming in 53rd place.

The women had a split squad run this meet with the rest of the women running tomorrow at the Puma/Concordia Classic.  The men ran most of their varsity runners at this meet, with the JV runners competing in tomorrow’s meet.
