Women's Cross Country Finish 1st Overall At All_Ohio Championship
CINCINNATI- The men's and women's cross country teams each finished in the top-10 Saturday at the All-Ohio Championship in Cedarville, Ohio. The women finished 1st overall with a dominating performance and the men came in at 9th overall and members from both teams had record-setting days.
Head coach Ryan Orner had a lot to say about the women's 1st place finish. "The women's team had one of their biggest wins in program history today; this is the first time in the 59 year history of the All-Ohio cross country championship that a Xavier women's team has won. Clare Fischer had an outstanding race, taking 3rd overall. Coming back from injury, Abby Fischer had a great day finishing 9th. Chelsea Hoffmaster had the best race of her life finishing with a personal best time and in 16th overall. The fact we had six girls under 19:00 minutes today without four of our top girls in the lineup is a great sign."
The women's team dominated the field of 43 other schools and 298 total runners with six finishes in the top 45 spots of the 5K race. The Musketeers were led by junior Clare Fischer's 3rd overall finish with a time of 17:53.84. With this finish, Fischer has broken into the top-10 in Xavier's 5K record book with each of her last three finishes. Saturday's time of 17:53.84 gives Fischer the fastest finishing time by a Musketeer in the last nine years and the second best time ever in women's 5K history, trailing only Kerry Hils' time of 17:43 back in 2001. Junior Abby Fischer was the second Musketeer in the top-10 with a time of 18:25.74, good enough for 9th. Junior Chelsea Hoffmaster finished in 16th place with a career best time of 18:34.10 and junior Jessica Albers finished 23rd with a time of 18:42.61. Other finishers included sophomore Audrey Ramos (18:56.09) who finished 40th and seniors Calesse Cardosi (18:56.62) who finished 42nd and Kaitlin Price (19:19.65) who finished 61st. The women won by with a score of 91 points.
Orner recognized the fact that the men's side had worked hard since the National Catholic Championship two weeks ago. "The entire group ran with tired legs from the past two weeks of hard workouts. Tom Ohlman and Hank Geer both ran well today finishing in the top ten. Both Spencer Liechty and Corey Zielinski ran personal best times in the varsity race and Austin Winter ran a huge personal best in the open race."
The men's team was led by their team captains junior Tom Ohlman and senior Hank Geer. Ohlman has been the top overall finisher for the Musketeers in each of the races he has participated in and all of his finishes have put him in the top-10 overall of each race, including a 6th place finish at the National Catholic Championship and the 1st overall finish at the Queen City Invitational. Geer has been the next best finisher for the Musketeers in every race he has participated in as well, with an 18th place finish at the National Catholic Championship and a 6th place finish at the Queen City Invitational. Ohlman finished 5th overall with a time of 24:45.73 in Saturday's 8K race and Geer quickly followed as finished 6th with a time of 24:46.84. Ohlman's and Geer's finishes on Saturday also make them the 5th and 6th fastest times in Xavier 8K history. Other finishers for the Musketeers were: senior Ben Foley (25:50.17) finished 56th, junior Spencer Liechty (26:16.03) finished 82nd, sophomore Corey Zielinski (26:22.64) placed 90th, Keith Schenkel (26:32.96) finished 107th, and sophomore Connor Buchholz (26:43.60) finished 117th. The men finished 9th out of 44 other teams and 301 total runners on Saturday.
The women's 5K open race came next and the women's team had four Musketeers participating in the field of 240 runners. Junior Anna Ahlrichs was the top finisher for the Muskies with a 19th place time of 19:37.04. Freshman Emily Wolery finished 58th with a time of 20:28.57. Sophomores Emily Kuhn (21:14.90) and Carrie Kurish (22:28.00) finished 105th and 173rd, respectively.
The men's 8K open race finished off the day and three runners represented the men's side in a field of 284 runners. Freshman Austin Winter finished 18th with a personal best time of 26:37.01. Sophomore Aaron Moore finished 58th in his first race of the season with a time of 27:30.00. Junior Nick Kobunski wrapped the day up for the Muskies with a time of 27:39.05, placing him in 69th.
The Musketeers have a week to rest before taking the trip down to Louisville, Kentucky for the NCAA Pre-Nationals on October 13th.
