SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Xavier men's and women's cross country teams delivered an outstanding performance at the National Catholic Championships, hosted by Notre Dame.  The men finished fourth out of 33 teams while the women's placed third out of 35.  The men's team improved their overall season record to 50-10 (3-4 A-10) while the women stand at 55-9 (3-5 A-10).

Xavier was the only team participating for whom this was their fourth race of the season.  After racing just six days earlier, the men were led once again by sophomore Tommy Kauffmann (25:23, ninth) and the women by senior Becky Clark (18:34, 13th).

Seniors Luke Beuerlein and Clinton Womack continued their trend as second and third Xavier finishers, posting times of 25:41 (13th) and 26:07 (22nd), respectively, to help lead the Musketeers.  Junior Drew Kaiser crossed the line next for XU in 35th at 26:29, followed by freshman Keith Albrektson in 42nd at 26:35.

Sophomore's Matt Riley and Ben Nathan were the sixth and seventh Xavier finishers, posting times of 27:09 (63rd) and 27:13 (66th), respectively.  Freshman Kyle Schenkel finished 76th at 27:27 while teammate Sam Lewis rounded up XU runners with a time of 27:35 in 84th place.

Head Coach Steve Nester felt that the women’s team ran their best race of the season so far.  Christina Schneider was the next best finisher after Clark, crossing at 18:54 in 26th place.  Sophomore Caitlin Thomas and junior Angela Menke followed closely behind, finishing in 28th (18:57) and 31st (19:02), respectively.

Freshman Caylin Howell was the fifth-best Xavier finisher in 56th with a time of 19:30.  Senior Ashley Stick followed at 19:40 in 66th.  Freshmen Kelsey Erlenbaugh earned 80th place with a time of 19:52, Micayla McGinn clocked in at 20:11 (98th), and Samantha Milroy placed 105th with a time of 20:17.

In the JV races, Nester was pleased with the performances of senior Katie Dominguez and sophomore Joe Ryan.

Both teams out-raced three Atlantic 10 rivals.  The women bested Saint Louis, Duquesne, and St. Bonaventure, while the men topped Saint Louis, Dayton, and St. Bonaventure.

The Xavier men’s and women’s cross country teams will have time to rest before returning to South Bend for the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3rd. Race time is set for 4:30 p.m. ET.
