Musketeers Turn in Top-5 Finish at the National Catholic Invitational

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Xavier University men's and women's cross country teams turned in impressive finishes at the 27th Annual National Catholic Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame on Burke Memorial Golf Course. The men recorded 206 points and a fifth place finish in a field of 31 while the women turned in 120 points and finished third in a field of 34. The men's record is now set at 27-12, 3-2 (A-10) while the women have posted a notable 37-5, 5-0 (A-10). Notre Dame claimed high honors on both the men's and women's side.

The men avenged an opening season defeat to Dayton at their Invitational and defeated all of the A-10 Conference teams except Duquesne. Sophomore Luke Beuerlein led the men's side finishing 17th in a field of 237 at 26:00 in the 5 mile race. Following Beuerlein was junior Ben Milroy finishing 26th in 26:15. Junior Tony Matheus was next across the finish line in a time of 26:49 while Clinton Womack claimed the No. 4 spot at 27:01. Rounding out the men's squad was freshman Drew Kaiser in a time of 28:01.

In the women's race, the Musketeers lost only to Nationally Ranked powers Notre Dame and Marquette and defeated all of their conference foes including Dayton, Duquesne, Saint Louis, and Saint Bonaventure. Freshman Danielle Meiners led the women's squad with an impressive 14th place finish at 18:58 in a field of 267. Following quickly behind Meiners was senior standout Kelly Sraj turning in a 17th place finish in a time of 19:01. Sophomore Becky Clark also turned in a top-20 finish in a time of 19:13. Junior Amanda Brown and freshman Kelsey Flaherty rounded out the women's squad in times of 19:26 and 19:57, respectively.

 

 

The Musketeers return to competition on Sept. 23 at the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. This is one of the biggest fields Xavier will compete in during the season.
