CINCINNATI- Another successful meet is in the books for Xavier as the men's squad finished first and the women came in second at the Queen City Invitational held at Voice of America Park. Xavier also took home the travelling trophy that was up for grabs between XU, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Sixteen Muskteers either broke or tied their personal-bests in the 5k distance. Senior Tommy Kauffmann and junior Caylin Howell were the top finishers for both squads. There were four men in the top 10 and five women in the top-25.
Head Coach Dan Flaute was pleased with his team's performance. "It was encouraging to win the men's race against a good UC team with a shorter distance than we're used to. UC came out with a strong women's squad, but I still think our girls competed well and we had some personal records," Flaute said.
Kauffmann battled the whole race with Eric Finan of Cincinnati. Kauffmann finished just off the lead with a personal-best time of 15:01. Junior Keith Albrektson was not too far behind coming in fifth place with a personal-best time of 15:23. Rookie Tom Ohlman was in seventh posting a time of 15:26. Sophomore Hank Geer was the 10th place finisher with a personal record time of 15:33. Junior Ben Foley rounded out the scorers for Xavier with a personal-best time of 15:41.
The men won with a team score of 27. Cincinnati was the second place finisher with 35 points and Wright State came in third in Division I with a score of 66.
Junior Caylin Howell shattered her personal-best by 36 seconds whie finishing if fourth place with a time of 18:31. Senior Caitlin Thomas ended in eighth place with a personal-best time of 18:41. Rookie Abby Fischer posted an 11th place finish off a time of 18:50. Fellow freshman Ashley Vincent equaled her efforts of last week with a 18:54 while placing 13th. Sophomore Rachel Clark rounded out the women's scorers with a personal-best time of 18:56 which earned her a 16th place finish.
Michele McKenney of Cincinnati was the top finisher on the women's side with a time of 18:04. Cincinnati won with a women's team score of 26 to Xavier's 36. Wright State was the third place team with a score of 64.
Other athletes earning personal-bests included: Ben Nathan, Joe Ryan, Spencer Liechty, Matt Coniglio, Kaitlin Price, Anna Ahlrichs, Madison Riethman, Samantha Milroy, Courtney Heys and Jessica Albers.
