Sep 6, 2013
MASON, Ohio - The Xavier Musketeer men's and women's cross country team hosted the 32nd-annual Queen City Invitational this afternoon in Mason, Ohio, where Abby Fischer took the individual title to lead the women's squad to the team title.
The Musketeers women's team came through with a strong performance finishing first amongst all women's teams. Abby Fischer led the pack, finishing with a time of 17:32.16. Not far behind Fischer was Clare Fischer, who finished third (17:44.79), Audrey Ramos who finished fourth (17:47.12), and Sarah Mazzei who finished fifth (17:48.87).
Head Coach Ryan Orner said, "The women's team executed the plan perfectly today. Our top four girls worked very in front of the race as a pack and controlled the tone of the race from the start. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better result with four girls in the top five and winning the team title."
The men's team finished sixth overall for the day, and fourth amongst Division I schools. The top runner for the men's team was Avery Campbell who finished fourteenth overall with a time of 15:35.11. Behind Avery, were teammates Aaron Peterson who finished twenty-sixth (15:45.61) and Jordan Shepard who finished twenty-seventh (15:45.61).
"Avery Campbell had a solid race, with a big improvement from last week finishing in the top 25," stated Orner. "The remaining guys had a solid pack midway through the race, but weren't able to close over the final mile to gain the necessary ground to finish higher in the standings. I look forward to having a completely healthy men's team in order to perform to their ability."
The Musketeers return to action Friday, Sept. 20 at the National Catholic Invitational held at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
