Ryan Orner

Welcome new head coach Ryan Orner to the Xavier family. Orner will be tasked with heading both the cross country and track and field teams.

Ryan Orner is entering his third season as the head coach of the Xavier men's and women's cross country and track and field teams.

During his first two season, Orner guided the program to a number of accolades and records. Women's cross country had their best finish ever at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship in 2012 placing 13th in one of the toughest regions in the country that saw five teams qualify for the NCAA Championship. In 2013, the team bested that finish by coming in 10th, and saw Clare Fischer qualify for the NCAA Championships, becoming the first Xavier athlete in cross country or track and field to qualify for the NCAA championships. The teams collected a number of impressive finishes, including a first place finish at the 2013 Queen City Invitational. Women's cross country also won their first ever All-Ohio Championship in the 52 year history of the meet in 2012.

In addition, Orner coached Clare Fischer and Tom Ohlman to All A-10 honors at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship in 2012. He also coached Ohlman to All-Great Lakes Regional honors in 2012 and Fischer collected All-Great Lakes Regional honors in 2013, becoming the second and third Xavier athletes to collect such honors.

He came to Xavier after spending the spring of 2012 at University of Cincinnati as an assistant coach of the Bearcats' men's and women's track and field teams. His major responsibility was with the development of middle through long distance runners.

Prior to coming to Cincinnati, Orner spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University for the Blue Jays' men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. He coached 19 individual NCAA DIII qualifiers and 14 NCAA DIII All-Americans during his tenure at JHU. In 2011, Orner was named Mideast NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year for indoor track by the U. S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

While at Johns Hopkins, Orner also coached the women's cross country team to five consecutive appearances at the NCAA Division III National Championship including three top 10 finishes. In his final season at JHU, the men's cross country team qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championship for the first time in school history. Orner led the Blue Jays to 11 team Centennial Conference championships combined across cross country and track and field.

Orner began his coaching career in 2006 at Oldfields School, a private boarding school in Baltimore County, Maryland. As the head coach, Orner was able to establish and develop the first cross country program at Oldfields.

Orner graduated from Towson University in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. While at Towson, he competed for both the cross country and track and field teams. As a captain of the Tigers' cross country team in 1999, Orner led the squad to a Maryland State Championship and the most successful season in team history. Orner also qualified for four ECAC championships and was a finalist at the America East Conference Championships in several events. He also received his master's degree in exercise science from McDaniel College.
