Matt McMasters is entering his second season with the Xavier men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. He will fill the role of assistant coach, working with both the cross country team and the sprinters, hurdlers and relays event group during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

McMasters returns to Xavier after spending last year as the graduate assistant for the cross country and track and field teams. He assisted with the cross country team with the women's team having their best season in school history. Notable team accomplishments included the highest regional finish in program history and 5th place in the BIG EAST Conference. During the 2013 cross country season, Clare Fischer was the first student-athlete in Xavier history to qualify for the NCAA Championships by obtaining an at-large individual bid from the Great Lakes Regional Meet. Academically, the men's and women's cross country teams finished All-Academic and Clare Fischer was named an All-Academic Individual.

During the 2014 track season, McMasters helped with the sprinters, middle distance and long distance runners. During the indoor season, Xavier student-athletes set three school records and during the outdoor season, an additional school record was rewritten. The Musketeers' track season concluded with the qualification of Clare Fischer and Tom Ohlman to the NCAA Regional Meet in Jacksonville, Florida, at which both qualifiers bettered their incoming seed places. In the classroom, the women's track and field team was named USTFCCCA All-Academic and Clare Fischer was again named an All-Academic Individual.

Prior to Xavier, McMasters spent seven years coaching middle school and high school track and field and cross country-most recently at Mount Notre Dame High School. Throughout his seven years coaching prior to Xavier, he coached sprints through middle and long distances.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, McMasters graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2011 with bachelors and masters degrees in biomedical engineering with a specializations in biomechanics. He then completed his first year of a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering before enrolling at Xavier University. He graduated from Xavier in May 2014 with his masters degree in education, with a specialization in sport administration.
