CINCINNATI - Sophomore distance runner Ashley Vincent qualified for the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championship 5,000-meter run on Thursday becoming just the fifth Xavier athlete to reach the regional meet.
Vincent is seeded 36th for the meet with her time of 16:34.74. She set the school-record time at the Stanford Invitational on April 6.
"I'm very proud of Ashley on becoming the third Xavier women's track athlete to qualify for an NCAA regional meet," head coach Dan Flaute said. "She has put in a tremendous amount of work this season to develop into a national class distance runner and is being rewarded for it by getting the opportunity to run against the best women runners in the country"
The 5,000-meter run will take place at 8:45 p.m. on May 26 at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida located in Jacksonville, Fla.
Vincent chose the event over the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which she also would have qualified for with her time of 10:32.41.
Vincent making the regional cut marks the fourth consecutive year that the Musketeers have qualified an athlete for a regional meet.
Tommy Kauffmann ran in the men's 10,000-meter run at last two east regionals. In 2009, Caitlin Thomas qualified for the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, April Phillips tossed in the women's shot put, and Luke Beuerlein ran in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
