CINCINNATI - The Xavier track and field team travels to Villanova, Pa., this weekend to compete in the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships presented by New York Life. The event will be held at Villanova University's campus on May 10 and 11.
The men's team has a stable full of runners and field athletes ready to leave their mark. The 4x100m relay team is currently ranked second behind DePaul. Russell Platt is currently ranked 2nd in the 100m, 4th in the 200m and 7th in the high jump. John Kolibab has been breaking records all season in the high jump, most recently eclipsing his own school record for the third time this season by clearing 2.04m (6'8.25") at the RedHawk Invitational.
In the pole vault, senior Craig Krcal is seeking his third conference championship. Krcal is ranked second after his 4.73 m (15'6.25") performance in California. Senior Tom Ohlman and freshman Aaron Peterson will represent in the 3000m steeplechase.
The women's team is led by senior Susannah Shelley, who will run 4x800m relay with Emily Staresinic, Madison Riethman and Haley Jerabek. Shelley leads the BIG EAST in the women's 800m. Sophomore Mercedes Oliver hopes to continue her successful season as she is currently ranked second in shot put, fifth in discus and eighth in hammer. The team will also feature several long distance runners, including senior Anna Ahlrichs who is ranked second in the 3000m steeplechase.
The men's and women's teams look to improve upon their performance at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, where they finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
