March 6, 2013
CINCINNATI- Two members of the Xavier track and field team have been named to the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Conference Team, which was announced Tuesday by the conference office. Pole vaulter Craig Krcal and long distance runner Spencer Liechty both earned their first career academic all-conference awards.
Krcal, a junior out Cleveland, Ohio, was the lone athlete specializing in the pole vault on the list, consisting of nine other names including Liechty. The highlight of Krcal’s season came three weeks ago when he placed first overall in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships in Kingston, Rhode Island, clearing a height of 4.80-meters (15’9”). Along with setting the new school record by almost a foot and a taking home a first place medal, Krcal became the first athlete in Xavier track and field history to medal in a field event at the conference championship meet. The St. Ignatius product was held to a limited number of appearances early in the season due to an off-season foot injury.
Liechty, out of Zionsville, Indiana, has been nothing short of consistent for the Musketeers this season, competing in most 3000-meter and 5000-meter events thus far. For the season, he has a top time of 8:56.79 in the 3000-meter at the Hoosier Hills Invite and 15:45.56 in the 5000-meter at the A-10 Championships, both career-best times. Other finishes for the junior include 8:59.74 at the Indiana Relays and 9:07.08 at A-10’s in the 300-meter and 15:45.61 at the Gladstein Invite in the 5000-meter, placing a season-best 12th out of 27 runners. The Zionsville High School alum holds the second and third fastest times of the season for the Musketeers in the 3000-meter and 5000-meter, respectively.
Krcal, a biology major, and Liechty, a political science major, have both performed in the classroom as well, both boasting high GPA’s and earning several academic accomplishments while at Xavier. Krcal is a member of Honors Bachelor of Arts program and Liechty has received the Dean’s Award and the Academic Excellence Award and earned places on the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll multiple times.
Xavier would also like to recognize an omission from the official Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship results. Senior David Gibson finished eighth out of 19 other athletes with a distance of 6.84-meters (22-05.25) in the long jump, tying a career-best he set at the 2012 A-10 Championships. The distance of 6.84-meters is the longest distance for any Musketeer in the long jump this season and Gibson also holds the team’s top time of 7.13 in the 60-meter dash, which is a career-best as well.
