CINCINATTI - This weekend the Xavier track and field team will be in New York City competing in the BIG EAST Indoor Championship. The Musketeers will try to make a mark in their new conference as they compete against several of the BIG EAST schools.
The team will face a competitive field in the distance events and will need multiple team members to meet the challenge. Due to this, it will rely on other event groups, particularly those participating in the field events, to perform well this weekend.
Athletes posed to make an impact are senior Tom Ohlman, sophomore Mercedes Oliver and senior Adrija Taraska. Ohlman is running in the 5000m and is ranked eighth on the BIG EAST performance list, while Oliver and Taraska are both taking part in the weight throw and shot put. Oliver is ranked No. 4 on the BIG EAST list and Taraska No. 6.
"With the new conference dynamic, we are sure to see many exciting performances against some of the nation's best athletes," said assistant coach Nicole Farr. "However since a few teams do not have track programs (Seton Hall, Creighton, or St. John's men only; 7 men's teams and 8 women's teams will be represented in total), the field sizes will be relatively small for a conference championship. This could work in our favor because our athletes will do everything they can to make finals in their open events, which would set them up to score points in the finals. Our teams both come in as an underdog against well-established programs like Villanova, Providence, and Georgetown, but we know the athletes are ready to rise up to challenges like these. In addition, this experience will help our underclassmen learn what it takes to compete in the BIG EAST, which will prepare the team for the upcoming outdoor season."
The BIG EAST Championship starts this Friday, Feb. 21 at 8:00 a.m. at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City and continues Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4:25 p.m.
