Feb. 19, 2014
CINCINNATI - Xavier track and field athlete Mercedes Oliver has been named the BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week after her career performance at the Hoosier Hills Invitational this past weekend in Bloomington, Ind. Oliver was among several athletes who set new personal records.
Oliver, a sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio, threw a distance of 13.21m, a personal record earning her a tenth place finish and moving her up to number four on the BIG EAST rankings. Oliver finished in the top twenty in the three events she competed in during last year's indoor track and field season and is scheduled to compete in this weekend's BIG EAST Indoor Championships in both the weight throw and shot put.
"Mercedes is a very hard working and driven athlete," said throwing Coach Bethany Anderson. "She comes to practice every day mentally and physically ready to put the work in that she needs to do. Her performance this past weekend has shown her what she is capable of in the future. Mercedes is fighting back from a hamstring injury and is determined to be the best she can be wrapping up this indoor season. We have set goals for this week and the work has been put in. All that is left is actually making the goal a reality at the conference championship. Mercedes is on the rise for bigger numbers and better standings."
The team competes in New York City this weekend for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. The championships start on Friday, Feb. 21 and continue Saturday, Feb. 22.
