CINCINNATI - Xavier track and field athlete Craig Krcal has been named BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week after his showing at the Mastodon Duals in the pole vault at IPFW this past Saturday. The Musketeer's men's team was able to take two victories away on the day, beating IUPUI 74-24 and BIG EAST rival, Butler 64-55.
Krcal, a senior from Cleveland, Ohio, was able to pole vault a height of 4.29m, which earned him first overall in the event. Krcal is returning after a successful 2013 indoor season where he broke the school record for the pole vault with a height of 4.80m at the Atlantic 10 Championship. This awarded Krcal a first-place finish, making him the first Musketeer to ever win in a field event in a conference championship meet. Krcal was also one of two Musketeers named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team for the indoor season after his impressive academic semester and finish at the A-10 Indoor Championship.
"This is my second year to have the pleasure to work with Craig," said head coach Ryan Orner. "Craig is one of the hardest working guys on our team as well as being a team leader. Craig really came into his own last year at the A-10 indoor track championships when he won the pole vault on his final jump of the meet. That momentum has carried Craig over the past year and I think he's got a great shot at winning the BIG EAST title in the pole vault this season."
Xavier track and field travels to Bloomington, Ind., this Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1, for the Indiana Relays at Indiana University.
