Fischer Closes Strong At NCAA East Regional
May 30, 2014
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Among less than desirable conditions, Clare Fischer used a strong final kick to earn a 21st-place finish in the 10k at the 2014 NCAA East Regional.
Temperatures in the low 90s throughout the day on Thursday made running conditions tough for the 48 runners participating in the event. Fischer conserved energy over the first half of the race and then began picking off runners one-by-one over the final 2k.
Through the last eight laps, Fischer passed six runners to finish 21st in the race. The native of Cleveland, Ohio improved on her qualifying position of 25th with a time of 35:08.98 in the regionals.
Fischer wraps up a Xavier career that saw her earn a trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships last Fall, making her the first athlete for either the cross country or track & field teams to reach the NCAA Championships.
Senior Tom Ohlman competes in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday night. Heats are slated to begin at approximately 8:50 p.m.
