Xavier Track Sets Numerous Records at A-10 Outdoor Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Xavier University men's and women's track teams closed out its season on a high note as the Musketeers turned in three school record performances and numerous season-best times as XU wrapped up competition on Sunday at the two-day Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Freshman Jeff Hileman posted the first school record of the weekend with a time of 11.89 in the 100-meter dash. Hileman then turned in another record performance in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.31.

Clinton Womack set a school record in the 800-meter run in 1:57.02 despite being tripped up during the run. Also in the 800, Jeff Meinert turned in a personal-best time of 1:59.61 and David Ford finished with a season-best time of 2:06.48.

All three of Xavier's entrants in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase ran personal best times with the sophomore trio including Matthew Weingardt (10:10.34), Ryan Reichert (10:13.94) and Tony Matheus (10:24.88).

The men's 4x800-meter relay finished in at 8:01.76 with Womack leading off with a personal-best time of 1:55.82, Meinert ran his leg in 2:00.06, followed by Paul Staudigel in 2:01.65 and Matheus, still recovering from an injury plagued indoor season, gave a gutsy effort with a time of 2:04.

The women's 4x800-meter relay ran the second fastest time in school history at 9:31.86 led off by freshman Becky Clark at 2:16.79, sophomore Caitlin Shagena ran the second leg in 2:23.68, junior Kelly Sraj posted a third-leg time of 2:27.58 and freshman Danna Deans completed the final portion at 2:23.69.

Amanda Brown posted the top individual finish for XU as the sophomore recorded a fourth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 38:43.50. Personal best efforts in the 10,000 were turned in by sophomore Joanna Gruber (42:17.73) and senior Kelly Leugers.

The 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships was the final event in the careers of seniors Shelly Dickinson, Kelly Leugers, Heather Stafford and Paul Staudigel. Each of these student-athletes made many important contributions to the Xavier running programs and the XU athletic department extends its congratulations and appreciation for their dedication in and out of the classroom over the last four years.
