Despite Bad Weather, Xavier Track Takes Home Five School Records

CINCINNATI - The Xavier University men's and women's track teams competed today at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati. Despite a chilling temperature of 30 degrees and windy conditions, both teams turned in impressive finishes. The women finished fifth in a field of eleven, while the men recorded an eighth place finish in a field of 12. During the meet five new school records were established. Headlining the record book was sophomore Becky Clark who set a new 1,500-meter run record, finishing in a time of 4:42.76, earning her first place in the event. The previous record of 4:45 was set by Jenny Andrassy in 2002. Clark also had an impressive finishes in the 800-meter run finishing second in 2:19.70, and ran the fastest split in the 4 x 400. Katie Phillips had a school-best performance in the 400-meter dash, previously held by sophomore Danna Deans, finishing in 1:02.06. Other standout performances on the women's side include: junior Amanda Brown, freshmen Dani Meiners and Bethany Moore, and junior Joanna Gruber, all running the 5,000-meter run. Brown ran her best race in over a year, finishing a strong sixth in a time of 17:53.00. Meiners, Moore and Gruber turned in strong finishes in 18:16, 19:05, and 19:13, respectively. Junior Cecelia Towns, first year track runner, cut over three seconds off her time in the 400-meter run finishing in 1:04.58. Freshman John Shultz led the noteworthy performances for the men's squad. Schultz had a strong debut in the javelin throw, taking second place in the event with a toss of 142'09". Schultz also broke his own record in the shot put, throwing a distance of 9.76m.
Freshman Derek LeBlanc claimed two school records. He took the 100-meter dash record away from sophomore Jeff Hileman, finishing in 11:57. LeBlanc also broke his own record in the 200-meter dash, turning in a time of 24.12. The Xavier University men's and women's track teams will return to action next weekend as they will compete in the Boston-Moon Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee. |
