Kauffmann Breaks Another Record, Men's Team Finishes Fifth Overall at Oliver Nikoloff Invitational

CINCINNATI- The men’s track and field team led by Tommy Kauffman, Nick Williams and Derek LeBlanc captured fifth place at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational held Saturday, April 3 at the University of Cincinnati. On the women’s side, despite having Caitlin Thomas finish in second in her race and Caylin Howell running a season-best time they finished in 12th place.
Tommy Kauffmann once again broke his own school record in the 5,000-meter race. He came in first place and smashed eight seconds off of his time finishing with a 14:25.23. Rookie Hank Geer was not too far behind his teammate, finishing in fourth place and getting a personal-record of 14:53.58. This is the first time Geer has gone sub-15 in the 5,000-meters and he knocked seven seconds off of his previous best.
Nick Williams led the way on the sprinting side again. Williams finished in sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.90. He came back and ran the 200-meter dash in 21.39, finishing in second place overall. Junior Ryan Ulmer finished in 10th place in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.75. Junior Ben Nathan came in ninth place in the 800-meters, cruising around the track in 1:57.05.
On the field side, Derek LeBlanc and David Gibson were at the top of their respective jumping events. LeBlanc won the triple jump with a bound of 13.89 meters. Gibson also participated and finished in sixth with a leap of 12.59 meters. Gibson came in third place in the long jump going 6.74 meters. LeBlanc finished in eighth with a distance of 6.42.
Other notable finishes on the men’s side include junior Tyler Fry who finished in ninth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:10.35. Rookie Ben Rumbaugh went under a minute for the first time this season going 59.12 in the 400-meter hurdles. Rumbaugh finished 14th overall.
The women were led by a great performance by junior Caitlin Thomas. Thomas finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:06.83. Sophomore Caylin Howell ran a season-best time in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:45.22 and finishing in sixth place.
Other notable finishes for the women include: Rachel Clark, who finished in ninth place in the 800-meter run with at time of 2:19.52. Senior Bethany Moore finished the 5,000-meters in 18:47.58 which gave her eighth place. Sophomore Brittani Peltz came in ninth with a time of 1:07.27 in the 400-meter hurdles.
