Junior Jessica Albers finished first overall in the 5k at the Early Bird Relays this past weekend.

CINCINNATI- The Xavier track and field teams both finished 4th overall this past weekend at the Early Bird Relays. The women were led by strong finishes in the 1500-meter run as well as the 5k, with a runner finishing first, second, and third in both races. The men’s side saw new school records in the javelin, high jump, and 1500-meter run as well.
The women’s side had 14 top-5 finishers in the events in which a Musketeer participated in, led by two 1-3 sweeps in the 1500-meter and the 5k. Junior Clare Fischer finished first with a time of 4:38.70, senior Rachel Clark finished second with a time of 4:40.00 and junior Abby Fischer finished third with a time of 4:40.81. In the 5k, the Musketeers were led by a first place finish by junior Jessica Albers with a time of 18:03.96, followed by sophomore Audrey Ramos in second with a time of 18:08.04, and freshman Sarah Mazzei finished third with a time of 18:09.10 in the first outdoor competition of her Xavier career.
The men were led by their lone first place finisher in sophomore John Kolibab in the high jump. Kolibab finished first at the Early Bird Relays in 2012 clearing a height of 1.93-meters. This past weekend, Kolibab finished first overall and set the new school record of 1.96-meters. Juniors Craig Krcal (javelin) and Tom Ohlman (1500-meter) also set school records Saturday. Krcal finished second in the javelin after a throw totaling 52.15-meters, destroying the previous school record that was set back in 2007. Ohlman finished third overall out of 33 other runners with a time of 3:54.65, besting the school record by almost a minute.
Other notable finishes for the women’s side include four top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run. Senior captain Kaitlin Price finished with a time of 2:17.13. Junior Susannah Shelley finished two spots behind Price, finishing fifth with a time of 2:22.97 and junior Madison Riethman finished eighth with a time of 2:26.15. Freshman Emily Wolery rounded out the top-10 with a tenth place finish with a time of 2:26.90.
Freshman Onya Edwards finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.49-meters and finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.22-meters. Sophomore Samantha Birchfield finished fourth in the 400-meter with a time of 1:00.32 followed by freshman Christine Lucas who finished sixth with a time of 1:00.53.
Other finishers for the men include senior Evan Betts who finished third overall with a time of 15.50 in the 110-meter high hurdles. Freshman Randall Mitchell finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.72-meters. Sophomore Ryan Konstanzer finished fifth in the 400-meter with a time of 50.96, nearly missing the school record set back in 2009 at the Early Bird Relays.
Rounding out the top finishers for the women’s side were junior Adrija Taraska and freshman Mercedes Oliver in the shot put. Taraska finished second with a distance of 12.46-meters and Oliver followed in third with a distance of 12.19-meters. Oliver also finished fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 37.70-meters.
Both the men’s team and women’s team finished fourth overall with the women earning 75 points and the men earning 56.50.
