Xavier Track And Field Complete Weekend At BIG EAST Indoor Championship

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. - Xavier track and field wrapped up its first BIG EAST Indoor Championship yesterday, placing high in several individual and team events with athletes setting new personal bests and school records.
There were multiple men's highlights on the day, starting with John Kolibab who set a new school record in the high jump by clearing a height of 2.00m. Kolibab finished third in the event.
Russell Platt had a busy weekend as he competed in three different events. Platt took eighth in the 60m finals (7.13), seventh in the 200m finals (22.57) and sixth in the high jump with a height of 1.95m.
The men's 4x800m relay team placed sixth in the event and broke the school record from 2009 of 7:45.60. The team of Jordan Shepherd, Grant Parrelli, Connor Buchholz and Corey Zielinski combined to cross in a time of 7:44.87.
The women's side continued its first BIG EAST championship by setting more school records and personal bests. Mercedes Oliver, coming off of being named BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week, set another school record in the shot put after her record-setting performance in the weight throw on Friday. Oliver threw a distance of 13.58m, earning her a second place finish.
Along with Oliver, Onya Edwards set another school record in the triple jump with a distance of 11.30m. This distance tied Edwards for an eighth place finish.
The women's 4x800m relay team of Madison Riethman, Haley Jerabek, Emily Staresinic and Susannah Shelley finished seventh with a time of 8:41.98. The women's 4x400m relay team had a season-best performance, placing eighth with a time of 4:01.05. The team consisted of Sydney Larkin, Victoria Chiller, Christine Lucas and Brenna McGrath.
Overall, the Musketeers set an impressive 8 new school records on the weekend. The men set records in the distance medley relay, high jump and 4x800m and the women set new records in the long jump, triple jump, weight throw, shot put and 5000m. Craig Krcal and Oliver were the men's and women's top performers for the meet decided by the coaching staff. Krcal won the men's pole vault on Friday and Oliver set new school records in both the weight throw and shot put.
The team will now begin to prepare for the outdoor season with its first meet on Saturday, Mar. 22 at the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.
