Record-Setting Day For Xavier At Hoosier Hills Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Xavier indoor track and field men's and women's 4x400-meter relays capped a record setting day for the Musketeers on the first day of the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
In all five records fell by the wayside on Friday for the Musketeers, who were running for the third time of the season at Indiana. The night ended with the men's 4x4 relay team of Ryan Konstanzer, Nick Williams, Evan Betts, and Brian Armstrong running a 3:22.52 in the event. It set the new mark by over three seconds.
Prior to the men's running of the event the foursome of Samantha Birchfield, Susannah Shelley, Brittani Peltz, and Nia Williams ran a 4:00.70 to set the second relay school record in as many weeks. The women's team finished seventh while the men took fifth in their respective 4x4 relays.
Nick Williams began his day by blowing away his previous record in the men's 200-meter dash. He clocked a 21.68 besting his old record of 21.93 set at last year's league indoor championship. Williams also took second in the event out of 30 runners who finished. It is the second time that he has broke an individual indoor school record this season.
Betts also continued what has been a weekly occurance in the men's 60-meter hurdles. On Friday the sophomore qualified for the finals of the event and set a new mark in the event for the fourth time this season. He placed seventh and will run in the finals on Saturday after finishing with a time of 8.49. The record has steadily fallen from 8.73 at the beginning of the season.
Senior Emily Tyler also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, by matching her school record of 9.05 in the women's event. Tyler took third out of 24 runners in the preliminaries and matched her time set in 2010.
Other notable performances on day one include senior Caylin Howell running a 5:03.18 in the women's one-mile race and took second in the process. Senior Brittani Peltz ran her second 200-meter dash of the season and recorded a 25.72.
The Musketeers return to the Gladstein Fieldhouse complex on Saturday morning to run for the final time ahead of next weekend's Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championship. Events scheduled for the final day include the finals of the men's and women's hurdles events and four invitational events.
