Another Record Setting Day At New Balanace Collegiate Invitational
Feb. 4, 2012
NEW YORK - A limited day of participating by the Xavier track and field team on the final day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational still yielded record -setting performances from junior Rachel Clark, sophomore Ashley Vincent, and senior Caylin Howell.
The runners were three of just seven athletes who competed on the last day of the meet. In all the Musketeers set four new school records at the meet known as one of the top indoor meets in the country.
Vincent notched her second-career school record of the season by running a time of 17:01.56 in the women's collegiate run. She finished 6th out of 34 runners in the race and broke the previous school record of 17:36.22 set by Caitlin Thomas two years ago at the same meet. Earlier this year Vincent marked a school best in the 3-kilometer run, but that was broken on Saturday by Howell.
Howell, who ran a leg in Friday's record setting distance medley relay, added her name to the top spot of the 3-kilometer spot. She ran a 9:58.32 in the event and finished 13th in the collegiate running of the race. Vincent's old time was 10:00.20 set three weekends ago.
Saturday's new best in the 800-meter run marked the second time that Clark has set a new top time in the event this season. She shaved off nearly two seconds off her old record with her time of 2:14.77, and took the 9th spot out of 73 runners in the process.
Sophomore twins Clare and Abby Fischer ran next to Vincent in the 5k run with Clare running a 17:31.22 to take the 13th slot and Abby clocking a 17:49.40 to finish 19th.
Only two runners took part for the Musketeer men on Saturday. Sophomore Tom Ohlman and senior Keith Albrektson ran in the collegiate 5-kilometer. Ohlman had the best finish grabbing fifth place with a time of 14:40.72, while Albrektson took 13th with his time of 14:51.78.
Xavier will make its third and final trip of the season to Bloomington, Ind. to take part in next weekend's Hoosier Hills Invitational. The Musketeers also participated at the Gladstein Invitational and Indiana Relays earlier this season. It will be the last meet before the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championship held at Rhode Island on Feb. 17-18.
