FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Xavier track and field team competed in the Mastodon Duals at IPFW yesterday in Fort Wayne, Ind., where multiple members of the team placed high in a number of events.
In the dual meet scoring, the men beat IUPUI 74-24 and BIG EAST rival, Butler 64-55, but lost to Detroit Mercy 52-100. Four sprinters placed high in the 60m dash; Russell Platt (2nd, 7.25), Matt Bryant (3rd, 7.26), Dimitrious Dimitroff (4th, 7.33) and Josh Phelan (6th, 7.47).
In the field events, pole vaulters Craig Krcal and Brett Neugebauer finished first and second and vaulted 4.29m and 3.99m, while John Kolibab won the high jump with a leap of 1.95m. Matt Bryant contributed to the team scoring by placing third in the men's long jump (6.05m) and the men's 4x400m relay team of Ryan Konstanzer, Jordan Shepherd, Nick Bartram and Connor Bucholz crossed third with a time of 3:31.26.
The women had a victory on the day over IUPUI, beating them decisively 78-19, but lost to Butler (62-71), IPFW (63-80) and Detroit Mercy (48-111). In the field events, Adrija Taraska finished second in the shot put, throwing a season-best mark of 12.53m. Onya Edwards placed second and third in the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 5.16m and 10.64m and Kaitlyn Crean also turned in a fourth-place effort in the high jump (1.45m).
Key mid-distance performances included Audrey Ramos, Anna Ahlrichs and Caterina Karas in the mile run. The trio finished third (5:10.00), fourth (5:14.20) and sixth (5:20.31) and Susannah Shelley finished second in the 800m with a time of 2:24.65.
The sprinting events were highlighted by Monica Mannings and Kristine Johnston. Mannings finished fourth in the 200m (27.71) and fifth in the 60m dash after setting a personal record of 8.21 in the prelims. Johnston turned in a third-place performance in the 200m (27.19) and seventh in the 60m (8.40).
Two 4x400m relay teams represented Xavier to conclude the meet. Susannah Shelley, Audrey Ramos, Emily Wolery and Sydney Larkin won their heat in 4:12.84 and the "A" squad finished third overall with a season-best time of 4:08.00, comprised of Tori Chiller, Haley Jerabek, Caterina Karas and Brenna McGrath.
The team will head Bloomington, Ind., next weekend for the Indiana Relays at Indiana University. The meet starts Friday, Jan. 31 and goes through Saturday, Feb. 1.
