BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Women distance runners grabbed two first-place finishes and Xavier had two record-breaking performances on the men's side during day one of the Gladstein Invite held on the campus of Indiana University.
Most of first day was dedicated to the preliminaries of the shorter sprint events and the distance events including the mile, 3,000-, and 5,000-meter runs.
Senior Caylin Howell and sophomore Ashley Vincent won the mile and 3k runs with times of 5:04.42 and 10:00.20, respectively. It marked the first time in three meet this season that any Musketeer has won an individual event.
Senior Nick Williams highlighted the men's opening day of the meet by setting a new school record in the 60-meter dash. He ran a 7.00 in the preliminaries making it the second time in as many meets that he has reset his school record. The previous mark was 7.03.
Also tying his record in the 60-meter hurdles was sophomore Evan Betts, who again ran an 8.56 in the prelims of the event. Both Betts and Williams qualified for the finals of their respective events on Saturday.
Sophomore Tom Ohlman's performance in the 3,000-meter run qualified him for the New Balance Invite. He finished third in the run with a time of 8:31.12 ahead of senior Keith Albrektson (8:45.46) in sixth and junior Hank Geer (8:58.65) in 10th.
Day two of the Gladstein Invite gets underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the women's 200-meter dash. It concludes later in the day with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
