CINCINNATI -- The Xavier women's swim team will dive into the 2010-2011 season Saturday as the Musketeers host Marshall at 3 p.m. at the O'Connor Sports Center.
"Right now we've gotten through the bulk of our base training well and have started to add some quality work in the past two weeks," said Xavier head coach Brent MacDonald. "After what I saw out of some of our women at the Alumni Meet I'm optimistic about what we can do against Marshall. Because the meet is short events our sprinters are really going to have to step up in order for us to have a chance."
The Musketeers are led by seniors Bethany Griffin, Kerry Wright, Kari Peglar, and Holly Hoover. XU is looking strong with three returning conference scorers and two Atlantic 10 medalists. XU also returns key swimmers Rachel Chickerella, Mary Podlaski, Courtney Sheilds, and Randi Windemuller.
Griffin set two individual school records last season to go along with three medley records she helped set in previous seasons. In 2010 she set a new school record of 56.13 in the 100 butterfly, and her 23.83 time in the 50 freestyle at the A-10 Championships was a new school-best. She also set a team top-10 time of 2:28.85 in the 200 freestyle at IUPUI and was a part of five team-best times in the 200 freestyle relay in 2009-2010.
Wright competed in numerous events in her junior season but it was in the 1,650 freestyle that she set a team-best time of 18:14.00 at the Atlantic 10 Championships. She also posted a team second-best time of 2:13.74 in the 200 butterfly at the A-10 meet, and was in the Top-10 in eight individual events.
Peglar's Xavier resume is filled with record-setting performances. The Chesterfield, Mo., native has set six individual records and has been part of three medley school record performances in her career. Last season Peglar set a team-best time of 1:52.03 in the 200 freestyle at the A-10 Championships and was tops in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle. She also set top times in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
Hoover had a strong junior year with team second-best times in the 50 and 200 backstroke events. She also had a strong showing in the 50 freestyle at the Zippy Invitational and in the 200 freestyle at Ohio.
The Musketeers added 12 new freshman and one sophomore transfer over the offseason.
Marshall is returning 16 letterwinners including five Conference USA finalists.
Results will be posted on GoXavier.com after the conclusion of the meet. Both the XU men's and women's squads will be in action next weekend for a meet at Cincinnati on Friday, October 22 for a 4 p.m. matchup and Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, October 23 for a 3 p.m. meet against the Redhawks.
