CINCINNATI - Xavier University's men's and women's swimming programs open the 2012-13 campaign with a pair of meets this weekend. The two squads travel to Louisville on Friday for a meet scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The Musketeers return home to O'Connor Sports Center for a Saturday afternoon meet against Cumberland. Saturday's meet has a 1 p.m. scheduled start.
The men's team looks to build off of a third-place finish in the Atlantic 10 Championships in 2012, a mark that tied the 2006 and 2008 squads as the best in program history. Returning for the Musketeers is Sam Conchuratt, who picked up a pair of individual bronze medals in the 100-Yard Butterfly and 200-Yard Individual Medley plus one gold and two more bronze medals in relay events during the A-10 Championships. XU will also look for big performances from junior Chad Thompson, sophomore Eric Dirvin and newcomer Knox Hitt.
Sophomore Carolyn Stewart returns for her second season at Xavier. Stewart picked up three bronze medals in last season's conference meet, with two of the three coming in individual backstroke events. Junior Courtney Shields, sophomore Natalie Hyde and freshman Mackenna Rife are three other Musketeer swimmers to keep an eye on this season.
Head coach Brent MacDonald is at the helm of the swimming program for his fourth season. MacDonald was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming Coach of the Year after guiding the men's team the a third-place finish in the A-10 Championship. MacDonald led the men's team to a program-best eight medals, including a record four gold medals, and saw Michael Zennedjian earn his second-straight A-10 Most Outstanding Performer.
