July 8, 2014
CINCINNATI - Former Xavier swimmer Chad Thompson, a 2014 Xavier University graduate, was announced as one of the 21 winners of the 2013-14 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
Thompson concluded his standout Xavier career with a stellar 2013-14 season, including winning six gold medals at the BIG EAST Championships. The feat earned Thompson the title of BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer and a spot on the All-BIG EAST Team. He holds several of the top times in Xavier Swimming history, including the school record for the 200 yard backstroke (1:48.32).
Thompson also earned recognition for his work in the classroom, earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll multiple times during his Xavier career and receiving the Dean's Award for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Twenty of the 21 Sport Excellence Award winners earned All-BIG EAST honors, while 13 were members of BIG EAST Championship-winning squads. Five BIG EAST Players of the Year were among those recognized, as well as nine who were either individual champions or voted as the top performers at their respective league championships.
