XU Women Inks Ten for 2005


Xavier University Head Swim Coach George Rathman is pleased to announce the addition of five women who committed this spring to become Musketeers in fall 2005. These five swimmers join the six prospects who committed to Xavier in November during the early signing period. The spring class includes Nicole Bujold, Bridget Dixon, Addie Ellspermann, Mary Catherine Mahon and Amber Thompson. They join the fall class of Bridget Benner, Kali Chatham, Alissa Schriner, Audrey Wilkerson and Jill Winhusen. The group reaches from New Jersey to California, as far north as Michigan and as far south as Florida.

"Continuing with our philosophy of attaining academic, athletic and service excellence, each individual who selected Xavier this year believes in achieving at the highest possible level as a Student-Athlete in Intercollegiate Division I Athletics," stated Rathman. "Xavier Swimming prides itself on meeting daily challenges in order to improve our season ending performance at the A-10 Championships. We look forward to the successful synergies that our upperclassmen and this incoming class will bring to the classroom, the pool and throughout the Greater Cincinnati community," continued Rathman. "Our goal is to be the best possible in all different aspects that contribute to enjoying a career as a successful Division I Student-Athlete," concluded Rathman.

Individually, here is a look at the spring class of Musketeers:

Nicole Bujold (Marion, Michigan/Marion High School) "We are very happy that Nicole selected Xavier as she is one of the top senior distance swimmers from Michigan," stated Assistant Coach Chris Gage. Nicole is an excellent Student-Athlete that will excel in both the pool and the classroom," concluded Coach Gage.

Bridget Dixon (New Market, Maryland/Linganore High School) This past season, Bridget placed 11th in the 100 fly at the Maryland All-Star meet. This spring, Bridget will graduate as Valedictorian of Linganore High School. "We look to Bridget to be an immediate contributor to the team in the fly events," stated Coach Gage. "Bridget comes to Xavier from Frederick Area Swim Team (FAST), an excellent club program with a proven track record of successful swimmers at the intercollegiate level," concluded Gage. Bridget is very active in her community as a member of the St. Peter's Youth Group as well as a volunteer research assistant at the National Cancer Institute.

Addie Ellspermann (Aurora, Illinois/Rosary High School) Competing in the 100 breaststroke and in multiple relay events, Addie helped lead the Rosary High School Swim Team to another successful season. At Xavier, the coaching staff will depend on her to perform in a similar manner and look to develop Addie's versatility and strength in multiple events. "We are excited that Addie selected Xavier to develop her swimming talent and to maximize her performance in numerous events. We look forward to coaching Addie as she develops into a breaststroker who will score at the A-10 Championships," noted Coach Gage.

Mary Catherine Mahon (Medford, New Jersey/Merion Mercy Academy) Looking to add depth to the backstroke and freestyle events, Mary Catherine will play a pivotal role in the future success of the Xavier Swim Team. As a senior, Mary Catherine exhibited steady progress throughout the entire season that resulted in winning the PIAA State Championship in the 100 backstroke as well as qualifying for Junior Nationals in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. "Mary Catherine has the work ethic and desire to be successful in Division I Swimming," noted Coach Gage. "We will look to her to contribute in the backstroke, freestyle and all relay events while competing for Xavier." She is an active member in her community serving with her school's Ministry Core Team and her Community Service Corp.

Amber Thompson (Bloomington, Indiana/Bloomington North High School) Amber will join the Musketeers from one of the top swimming states in the country and one of the top high school programs in Indiana. An extremely versatile swimmer, Xavier will look to Amber to contribute in the fly, IM, and sprint free events. "Amber is a well-rounded swimmer. She will be a threat for us in multiple individual and relay events. Her versatility will allow us to compete with different dual meet line-ups during the season which will be a win for all team members," commented Coach Gage. An active member in multiple community service projects, Amber has expressed an interest in pursing a degree in Xavier's Williams College of Business program.

Updates on the fall class of Xavier Musketeers:

Kali Chatham (Louisville, Kentucky/Sacred Heart Academy) Led Sacred Heart to a second place team finish at the Kentucky State High School Championships by placing 9th in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

Alissa Schriner (Dayton, Ohio / Centerville High School) Placed 5th in the 200 Medley and 12th in the 100 fly at the Ohio State High School Swimming Championships. Throughout the season, achieved personal best times of 58.81 in the 100 fly (All-American status), 2:09.70 in the 200 fly, 1:56.14 in the 200 free, and 5:09.01 in the 500 free.

Audrey Wilkerson (Indianapolis, Indiana / Bishop Chatard) Finished 16th at the Indiana High State Swimming Championships in the 100 backstroke. Broke the 1:00 barrier with a personal best time of 59.44.

Jill Winhusen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame) Ohio High School State qualifier in the 100 fly and 200 IM events. Finished 4th in the State Championships in the 100 Fly with an All-American qualifying time of 58.26.
