Musketeer Swimming Begins Day Two Of A-10 Championships
Xavier Breaks Four School Records In Friday's Prelims

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Xavier Swimming teams broke four school records in Friday morning's preliminaries of the 2004 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships.

Sophomore Kyle Hawley (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) had the best performance of the day for the Musketeer men as he won the time trial of the 200 Freestyle while establishing a new school record of 1:42.76. Classmate Matt Normile (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) follwed in ninth place while junior Brian Waymire (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) was 16th.

In other men's action, junior Matt Young (Mt. Washington, Ky./St. Xavier) performed well in an Individual Medley for the second straight day. Young, who placed second in the 200 IM last night, was also second in the 400 IM preliminaries on Friday. He is joined in the finals by seniors John Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) who sixth and Jeremy Clark (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding).

The duo of sophomore David Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and freshman Neil Reierson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) also reached the finals of the 100 Butterfly as Janszen was sixth and Reierson was 12th.

Janszen also qualified for the finals in the 100 Backstroke in fourth place followed by freshman Mike Thallmer (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) in 12th position.

Sophomore Daniel Milheim (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and freshman Joe Conklin (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) rounded out the Musketeer men to qualify for the finals as they were sixth and 15th respectively in the 100 Breaststroke.

Junior Becky Faust (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) was the top XU female performer as she reached the finals of the 400 IM. Faust broke the school record while placing fifth in 4:35.14. Teammates Janet Heil (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Heather Greidanus (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) also qualified for the finals in seventh and 15th position respectively.

A pair of Musketeer women reached the finals of the 100 Butterfly led by sophomore Sarah Brown. Brown (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) placed ninth in the prelims after breaking the school record with a time of 59.23. Heil also qualified for the finals of the 100 Butterfly as she was 10th in the time trial with a time of 59.55.

Xavier's women broke another school record in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of Molly Moeller, Krystel Kooyman, Sarah Brown and Angie Hinrichs were fourth in a time of 1:49.23.

Three XU women reached the finals of the 100 Breaststroke as junior Sarah Blush (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) was fifth, Kooyman (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) was eighth and senior Danielle Miller (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota East) was 10th.

Two Musketeers each reached the finals of the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke. Hinrichs (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) tied for seventh in the 200 Free while Dana Hunter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) was 13th. Senior Molly Moeller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) qualified fifth in the 100 Backstroke follwed by junior Kristy Ulrich (Hillsborough, NC/East Chapel Hill) who was 12th.

All of the Musketeers who placed in this morning's Top 16 will return for tonight's finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
