CINCINNATI - Xavier's Chad Thompson was named BIG EAST Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week in the first weekly release of the award in 2014. The senior swimmer won four events this past week at the Butler Invitational and a tri-meet with Oakland and Cleveland State to earn the weekly award.
Thompson was the lone individual victor for XU's men's team at the tri-meet in Rochester, Mich., competing in the 200 IM and winning with a time of 1:55.89. Later in the meet, Thompson joined teammates Armando Moss, Rodrigo Suriano and Luke Johanns to claim the 400 freestyle relay at the end of the meet (3:07.27).
The following day, Thompson won the both the men's 100 and 200 backstroke events with times of 52.76 and 1:55.09, respectively, and earned a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:13.22) at the Butler Invitational.
This marks the first weekly award for the senior since the move to the BIG EAST and the second of the 2013-14 season for Xavier. Nick Strader earned the first weekly award handed out by the BIG EAST in late November.
Xavier and Thompson will be back in action Friday night as they travel to Wright State for a meet starting at 5:00 p.m.
