Freshman David Gordon placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle

AKRON, Ohio - With 1578.5 points the Xavier men's swimming team captured the 2009 Akron Zippy Invitational, defeating nine other teams, while the women placed seventh out of 13 teams. Sophomore Michael Zennedjian took home three individual gold medals and three relay golds to lead the Musketeers.
After Sunday morning's preliminary events, the Musketeers' long-distance swimmers competed in the 1650-yard freestyle and freshman David Gordon finished second with a time of 16:09.74 and junior Lindsay Barton touched fifth (17:29.98).
In the last round of finals, senior Mickey Hafertepe turned in a third-place finish (1:51.30) in the 200-yard backstroke and freshman David Maxwell finished right behind him (4th - 1:51.70). Junior Nathan Green took bronze in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.19.
Zennedjian set a meet record in the 200-yard butterfly with his first-place time of 1:51.06 while junior John Roof finished fourth (1:56.39) and freshman Landon Graham touched fifth (1:56.59) in the same event. Junior Terence Mahon, Hafertepe, junior Andrew Viglione and Green placed fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:07.74).
In the women's 200-yard backstroke, junior Kari Peglar touched second with a time of 2:03.83 and senior Martha Cutter-Wilson finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.44). In the 200-yard butterfly, senior Elaina Suba placed eighth (2:13.74). Junior Bethanie Griffin, senior Alison Johnson, Suba and Peglar teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Musketeers will have a few weeks off before heading to Florida for their annual mid-season training trip at the beginning of the year.
