Men's Swim Team Finishes First at 2007 Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Xavier men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up competition at the 2007 Zippy Invitational Sunday evening with the men finishing in first place out of the 11-team field. The Musketeer women's team took fourth place overall for the weekend out of nine teams. Two more program records were broken Sunday, one each from both the men's and women's teams. For the men, freshman John Buckley turned in a school-record time of 2:05.71 in the 200 breaststroke event, which was good for a first-place finish. Buckely also swam a leg of the fourth-place finishing 400 freestyle relay team (3:09.56). Redshirt-sophomore Sam Gray touched second in the 1650 freestyle (16:51.45) while senior Nico Lilly placed fifth (17.15.57) in the same event. In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Mickey Hafertepe placed fifth with a time of 1:56.94 and freshman Nathan Green picked up a fifth place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.26). Freshman John Roof took first place in the 200 butterfly (1:54.78) and senior Brian Stromberg placed fifth (1:58.75) in the same event. On the women's side, freshman Lindsey Barton's third-place finish in the 1650 freestyle event was good for a new Xavier program record time (17:21.64). Freshman Kari Peglar finished seventh in the same event with a time of 17:32.56, the second-best time in program history.
Junior Mary Catherine Mahon touched fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:07.70) and sophomore Martha Cutter-Wilson placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.28). Peglar and Suba teamed with sophomore Alison Johnson and freshman Ashley Sohngen to take fifth place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.75. Next up for the swim teams is the annual spring training trip. The Musketeers will be traveling to Coral Springs, Fla. during the first week of January and will compete in a spring training meet sometime over the course of the trip.
