CINCINNATI - The Xavier University men's and women's swimming teams sit in second and third, respectively, in the Magnus Cup Invitational after the first day of competition. In the four-team men's field, the Musketeers trail only host-school Cleveland State, while the women sit in third place amid the six teams in competition.
With 274 points, the women's swimming team only trails Michigan State (579) and Cleveland State (427) in the standings. Strong showings in the 200 free relay by teams consisting of Claire Brolsma, Molly Kroeger, Courtney Shields and Anne Frigo and Jacquelyn Misanik, Carolyn Stewart, Kristen Liebert and Randi Windemuller claimed fourth and seventh, respectively.
The men's team started with third and fourth-place finishes in the 200 free relay en route to 375.5 points on the day. Pablo Morejon, David Maxwell, Carter Clark and Luke Johanns teamed to finish third and Sam Conchuratt, Knox Hitt, Eric Dirvin and Chad Thompson took fourth.
Haley Dresner finished third in the 50 breaststroke for the Musketeers. Natalie Hyde (5th) and Anne Frigo (7th) also earned points in the A-Final of the 50 breaststroke.
Mackenna Rife picked up 21 points with a blistering time of 4:59.30 in the 500 free making Rife the second fastest swimmer in the event in program history. In the final of the men's 500 free, Kiernan McGeehan (4th), Alex Huff (7th), Landon Graham (8th) and Nick Foster (9th) finished in the top nine.
In the men's 200-yard IM, Eric Dirvin finished fifth and Michael Gordon nabbed a seventh-place finish. Frigo added a sixth-place finish in the women's 50 free and, on the men's side, Johanns came in fifth.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Misanik, Dresner, Shields and Frigo took fourth. Maxwell, Rick Stewart, Conchuratt and Johanns comprised the second-place men's 400 medley relay team.
Action in the Magnus Cup Invitational will resume with more preliminaries at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with finals in the same events scheduled for the afternoon.
