SEWELL, N.J. - The Xavier University men's and women's swimming teams started the BIG EAST Swimming Championships with a bang today. The men's team won the 800 free relay for the program's first victory in the conference championships since the team joined the league in July.

The women's 800 free relay team of Molly Kroeger, Mackenna Rife, Jacquelyn Misanik and Taylor Jach staked a fourth-place finish with a time of 7:39.45 to get the evening under way.

Then, Chad Thompson, Luke Johanns, Eric Dirvin and Will Oswald beat the field by over three seconds in the men's 800 free relay. The four men combined for a time of 6:41.02, the third-fastest time ever posted at XU.

Carolyn Stewart, Maddie Day, Ashley Whitely and Claire Brolsma teamed for a second-place showing in the 200 medley relay. The women's time of 1:44.05 ranks third-best in program history.

The most exciting event of the night came in the men's 200 medley relay. Xavier was out-touched by .01-seconds and had to settle for second place. Knox Hitt, Carter Clark, Armando Moss and Rodrigo Suriano posted a time of 1:31.37, which was just behind Georgetown.

Competition resumes at 9 a.m. Thursday morning with prelims and will be followed by event finals at 5 p.m..
