XU Completes Third Day of A-10 Swimming Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Michael Zennedjian won his first individual gold medal and junior Nathan Green won a silver Friday night as the Xavier swim teams completed the third day of competition at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Swimming Championship. More school records were broken as well as both teams sit in sixth place heading into the final day of the championship.

In the first event of the night, senior Martha Cutter-Wilson touched fourth in the championship finals heat of the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:30.83. In the consolation finals, senior Kelsey Burns placed 13th (4:37.86) and sophomore Mary Podlaksi touched 15th (4:38.60).

Zennedjian blew his competition out of the water in the men's 400 IM, taking gold with a school-record time of 3:56.82 which was more than two-and-a-half seconds faster than the next competitor. Also in the championship finals, freshman Jared Ness finished seventh (4:06.40). Freshman Sam Conchuratt placed ninth (4:09.39) and classmate Landon Graham touched 14th (4:13.96) in the 400 IM as well.

Junior Bethanie Griffin set a new school record in the 100-yard butterfly with her preliminary time of 56.13. She placed fifth in the finals (56.88) of the event and senior Elaina Suba placed 11th (57.75). For the men, Conchuratt touched in a tie for 11th place with his time of 51.27 in the 100 fly.

Junior Kari Peglar placed fifth in the women's 200-yard freestyle event (1:52.67) and classmate Nathan Green took home silver in the same event (1:39.37) for his second medal of the championship. In the men's 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Chadeau Wilson came in 12th place overall (58.44) and senior Mark Febus placed 16th (1:00.49). Senior Mickey Hafertepe turned in a time of 50.88 which was good for sixth place in the 100-yard backstroke. In the same event, junior Terence Mahon took ninth (51.15).

In the final event of the night, Peglar teamed with Cutter-Wilson, Griffin and senior Alison Johnson in the 400-yard medley relay, turning in a seventh place finish with a time of 3:54.99. For the men, Hafertepe, Zennedjian, Conchuratt and Green placed fifth (3:23.09).

The Musketeers will close out the 2010 Championship Saturday with preliminary events beginning at 10:30 and finals at 6:30.
