INDIANAPOLIS - After nearly a two-month hiatus between competitive races for the Xavier men's and women's swim teams, the Musketeers took to the pool against IUPUI and Ball State on Friday evening. The men won both of their dual meets, while the women dropped each of theirs.

Xavier's men registered two of the top three spots in the 200 medley relay to get things started, with Rodrigo Suriano, Carter Clark, Knox Hitt and Armando Moss claiming second (1:36.91) and Will Oswald, Michael Gordon, Erik Biernat and John Kinney touching third (1:37.85).

Mackenna Rife gave the women's squad a fourth-place finish in the 1000 free (10:50.27) before Nick Strader (9:43.11) and Nick Foster (9:55.54) took first and third, respectively, in the men's race.

Molly Kroeger posted a time of 1:57.18 in a fourth-place effort in the 200 free. On the men's side, Arthur Smith (1:46.08) and Oswald (1:46.77) touched second and third, respectively. In the 100 back, Carolyn Stewart claimed fourth (1:00.29) for the women, while Chad Thompson was out-touched by two-hundredths of a second (53.67) and had to settle for runner-up in the event. Suriano was close behind Thompson in third (53.97).

 

 

As the meet continued, the men kept their streak of top performances. Erik Futscher (2nd - 1:02.24), Rob Van Kirk (3rd - 1:02.63) and Clark (4th - 1:02.67) continued to add points for Xavier with their performances in the 100 breaststroke. Sarah Stone added another fourth to the women's total, posting a time of 2:14.95 in the 200 fly.

After competing in the AT&T Winter Nationals in early December, Luke Johanns ,Moss, Suriano, Thompson and Stewart put their experience swimming against the top swimmers in the country to good use. Johanns won the 50 free (21.39) and was followed closely by Moss, who took second in 21.51. Moss later added a third-place in the 100 free (48.25). Stewart tacked on a second-place finish in the women's 200 back (2:11.02). Suriano won the men's event (1:57.28), while Thompson finished third (1:57.71).

Strader grabbed his second victory of the meet in the 500 free. The freshman posted a time of 4:44.61 in the win. Hitt touched second in the 100 fly (51.77) and Thompson swam away with first in the 200 IM (1:57.49), winning by nearly two seconds.

The women's 200 free relay team of Stewart, Claire Brolsma, Kroeger and Maddie Day closed the day with a third-place effort (1:41.58). Moss, Clark, Johanns and Suriano ended Xavier's men's evening with a victory in the 200 free relay (1:24.92).

Xavier has a week off before heading back to the starting blocks at home in the O'Connor Sports Center against DePauw on Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
