George Rathman is entering his 10th season as head coach of the Xavier University swimming teams. During his tenure, Rathman's two teams have established over 112 school records and achieved 90 percent personal records. Last season, both teams achieved their highest Atlantic 10 Championship point totals, with the men placing third -- the team's best ever. In 2004, the women's team placed second and has finished in the top half of the conference the past three years.

Academically, the teams have received both national and conference recognition, with both teams ranked as high as second among Division I programs. Beyond the team's 3.36 combined team GPA, individual A-10 Awards include a Student-Athlete of the Year, two Post-Graduate Scholarship Recipients, 21 Academic All-Conference Awards and over 135 Commissioner's Honor Roll Awards. Additional individual accomplishments include a Xavier University Paul O'Connor Student-Athlete Award, two Xavier University Valedictorians and the first winner of the Robb Schuler Memorial Scholarship (awarded to Lindsay Jackson in July 2006).

"The success of the program is a reflection of the dedication and determination of over 200 individuals who have focused on achieving at a higher level each season," said Rathman. "This season is no exception. We have the potential once again to exceed past accomplishments both in the pool and in the classroom. Both teams will be exciting to watch as we work towards reaching our goals and maintaining our tradition of excellence as we take the program to the next level."

Rathman brings to Xavier over 20 years of experience in the sport of swimming as an athlete and a coach. Rathman was an Ohio High School State Champion at Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School as well as an All-American and a Junior National Finalist.

Before coming to Xavier, Rathman spent five years at St. Ursula Academy, winning three state championships. He also led the Cincinnati Marlins to four state championships as an age group coach. In 1999, Rathman was named NCAA Compliance Coordinator for Xavier. In addition, he serves as the administrator for the Xavier University Golf Teams. Rathman, 40, received his Bachelor of Science degree in commerce from the University of Virginia in 1988, and earned a law degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1992. He is also certified to teach elementary education.
